New Year's Resolutions

  • Today I’d like to tell you about a paper by a group of researchers in Sweden.
  • The paper is titled, A large-scale experiment on New Year’s resolutions: Approach-oriented goals are more successful than avoidance-oriented goals.
  • It was published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE in December 2020.
  • The researchers wanted to find out what kinds of resolutions people make, how confident they are that they will stick to their goals, and how successful they are.
  • They wondered whether phrasing their goals as “approach-oriented” or as“avoidance-oriented” made a difference in success rates.
  • They also wanted to know if having support in the form of information and exercises in goal-setting would increase their success.
