Revolutionizing Lipedema Care:
New Study Reveals Lymphatic System’s Key Role in Diagnosis and Treatment
Hello Lipedema Community! It’s Leslyn Keith Research and President of the Board for the Lipedema Project, it’s my mission to keep you informed about the latest research in our field and I am back with exciting research News!
Groundbreaking Insights from Cell Press
I’m excited to share about a significant study published in Cell Press in July 2020, entitled “The Lymphatic Vasculature in the 21st Century: Novel Functional Roles in Homeostasis and Disease.” Spearheaded by Guillermo Oliver of Northwestern, Chicago, and Natasha Harvey, a notable researcher from Australia, this paper is a game-changer in understanding lymphatics.
Lymphatics: More than Meets the Eye
The study delves deep into the lymphatic system’s role in both health and disease. Here’s something fascinating: the authors suggest that even minor changes in our lymphatic system could lead to varying responses to a range of human diseases. They’ve found lymphatic vascular defects in conditions like obesity, cardiovascular disease, inflammation, hypertension, and even neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.
Why This Matters to Us
For our community, this study is particularly relevant. Remember our discussion on Platelet Factor 4 as a biomarker for lymphatic dysfunction? Since women with lipedema show elevated levels of PF4, we understand that lipedema is indeed a lymphatic disorder. But here’s the catch – lipedema presents differently in each individual. This research suggests that these subtle differences in lymphatic function might explain the variability in lipedema presentations.
Diagnosing and Treating Lipedema
Despite these variations, we can still accurately diagnose lipedema, much like how Alzheimer’s or hypertension is diagnosed. The study’s authors conclude that uncovering asymptomatic lymphatic defects in various diseases could revolutionize diagnosis and treatment strategies – and this includes conditions like lipedema.
Looking Forward
So, what does this mean for us? It opens up new avenues for better diagnosis and potentially groundbreaking treatment and prevention methods for lipedema and other related conditions.
Stay tuned for more updates. Together, we’re staying on the cutting edge of lipedema research!
